ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Vivek Ramaswamy admits Father hasn’t Taken US Citizenship Test
Vivek Ramaswamy has revealed that his Indian father has not taken the US citizenship test.
The 2024 US presidential candidate said only his mother has taken the test after repeatedly claiming his parents took the test.
His revelation comes in spite of his stances on immigration.
Ramaswamy has said that in order to graduate, high school students should be required to pass the civics test that immigrants have to take before becoming a US citizen.
When asked if his father took the test, Ramaswamy said:
“He did not. And that’s a choice that he has made for familial reasons.
“But my mother did.”
Ramaswamy is the son of two Indian immigrants.
He is married to Apoorva Tewari, whose parents also emigrated from India. The couple has two sons.
The entrepreneur explained that his mother took the test and completed the citizenship process after he was born.
Vivek Ramaswamy stated:
“And I think that every immigrant who comes to this country in order to become a full voting citizen has to do the same.”
Not only does he believe all immigrants should have to take the test but Ramaswamy also says that those US citizens between 18 and 24 should be required to pass a civics test before being given the right to vote.
When speaking with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds in August 2023, Ramaswamy said:
“I think there’s no reason why every high school student who graduated in this country should not have to pass the same civics test that an immigrant, like my parents, had to pass in order to become a citizen of this country.”
Among his other controversial immigration stances, Vivek Ramaswamy also said that as President, he wants to strip citizenship and deport those born to illegal migrants in the United States.
Ramaswamy was born in the United States, meaning he gained citizenship through birthright.
He said: “I want to be very clear about this.
“I think that birthright citizenship does not and should not apply to the kids of parents who entered this country illegally.
“Here’s the policy we’re gonna apply — this is where I’ve been clear, the kid of illegal immigrants, and the families who came here undocumented, have to be returned to their country of origin.”
Vivek Ramaswamy noted that his parents immigrated to the US legally.
He wants to completely overhaul the US immigration system and implement a skill-based scheme to match the needs of the country.
As he criticised the H-1B visa, he said:
“It’s a lottery. Why on earth would you use a lottery when you could use meritocratic admission instead, restore merit.”
H-1B visas allow US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. It is a non-immigrant visa that is highly sought after by Indian IT professionals.
His wife said her parents would agree with the system.
She said: “Oh, 100 per cent. I think immigrants know, most of all, how broken our immigration system is.
“We want to work it so that we can get people who can actually serve the needs that we have as Americans.
“That is the most powerful thing. I think immigrants most of all know why our system is broken.”
